Sermon: Bobby Kirkpatrick
“We Want a King”
1 Samuel 8
THE FLOWERS ON THE ALTAR TODAY are given by Carmen Garcia and family in loving memory of Raul, who left us 2 years ago. He was a wonderful husband & father and is deeply missed.
OUR HEARTFELT SYMPATHY goes to Scott & Patty Lee on the passing of Patty’s father Bob Hayes, who passed away Friday, October 9th.
GARAGE SALE DONATIONS for our November 14th fundraiser benefiting Missions and EFYM 2016 Women’s Retreat are still being accepted. We have started selling large items on Craig’s List. If you would like to help sort and price garage sale items, workdays are scheduled on the following Wednesdays from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.: October 21st & 28th. Many volunteers are needed to move items from the Education Building to the Friends Center, Set Up and Pricing, Cashier Station, Break Room, Parking Lot Attendants, and Sales Floor Helpers. We could use youth help to bag customers’ purchases and help people to their cars. Sign Up sheets will be in the Coffee Cafe after each service today or you can email Diane Leaverton to sign up.
IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE getting large garage sale items (such as furniture) to the church, please contact the church office. There will be several “pick up days” scheduled in the next few weeks, so someone will contact you soon to arrange to help with transporting your donated items.
DONATIONS NEEDED FOR KIDS HOPE USA. We are in need of some items to get our mentor supply closet up and running. There will be a KHUSA box in the Coffee Café to drop off items. Contact Katelyn Sanders for more information. The donation items needed are: flashcards, puzzles, board games, coloring books, cards, stickers, printing paper, construction paper, notebook paper, markers, crayons, glue, chalk, scissors, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, volleyballs & Frisbees.
OCTOBER IS PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH! The Clerk and Coordinators encourage you to take time to let our pastors know how much their ministry means to you. For the past several years we have had a tradition of “showering” our pastors with gift cards to local businesses. A card or a thoughtful note would also be a great way to express your appreciation. And, don’t forget to lift up our pastors in prayer on a regular basis.
DO YOU HAVE A HEART TO SHARE GOD’S LOVE through word and/or music at a facility for the elderly? Kay Griffin is looking for people who would be interested in being part of a team to minister at a local nursing home on the 2nd Sunday afternoon of each month. She is hoping for enough volunteers that each person would only serve once every few months. The residents currently have just one service per month, and since most aren’t able to get out to attend church services, they would love to have another opportunity to worship together. If you would like more information, please contact Kay Griffin.
A FLU SHOT CLINIC will take place in the Coffee Café on Sunday, October 25th from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Most types of insurance cover the cost of the shot, so bring your insurance card with you. For self-pay, the cost will be $28 for the regular flu shot, or $56 for the high dose shot recommended for those over age 65. A limited number of pneumonia shots will also be available. Children under 8 years old are not eligible to receive shots at the church, since those are given by prescription only.
SUNDAY MORNING GREETERS are needed. This is a very important ministry that involves a minimal time commitment; all you need to do is be here a few minutes before the service to smile and say “good morning” to people as they arrive. If you would be willing to do this a few times a year, please contact the church office at 281-482-7821. You can choose either worship service, and we’d be glad to work around any special scheduling needs that you have.
FALL CLEAN UP: Want to take a step towards a cleaner environment? Help us pick up trash along our bayous and creeks! Join Green Friends on Saturday, October 24th. We will meet in the church parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and be back by 1 p.m. Whatever we collect is so much less trash that spoils our land. Bring gloves and shoes to get dirty. For more information, contact Mark Rubash at 281-433-8024.
YOU ARE INVITED to attend one or more of the Halloween block parties that are being planned for Saturday, October 31st by some of our church members. The Baumer family will host a Friends and Neighbors Fall Harvest Party from 4 to 6 p.m. Come to enjoy treats and games; bring a canned good to share with the food pantry. Bobby and Janet Black will host a party from 6-8 p.m. with popcorn and some of our traditional Fall Festival games. All ages are welcome. Sandra Schell & Christine Lyles will be hosting a Young Teens Party from 6 to 9 p.m. Jr. High age kids are invited to come play basketball, trick or treat, enjoy a fire pit and s’mores and much more! Watch in the coming weeks for more details (including address information) on these and other block parties that are being planned for the weekend of the 31st.
