Sermon: Becky Towne
“Anticipation, Expectation, Celebration”
THE FLOWERS ON THE ALTAR TODAY are given to the Glory of God and with thankfulness for all peacemakers. Lord, make us instruments of your peace – sowing love, pardon, faith, hope, light and joy. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” Matthew 5:9. – Paul & Janis Street
TRANSPORTATION TO CHURCH NEEDED: Would you be willing to help provide a ride to church for Verla Perry once in a while? Verla lives at Village on the Park, just a mile and a half from the church. She is no longer able to drive and really misses being in our worship services. If you could help out with this need occasionally, please contact the church office. Thank you!
BIBLE QUIZ PARENT INFO MEETING TODAY: We’re excited to get our Bible Quiz season off and running again for this year! Interested parents and students (7th & 8th grade) are invited to attend an informational meeting today from 4-5 p.m. in the youth room. We’ll discuss the travel schedule and fundraising ideas along with giving some basic information about the program. Practices will take place on Sunday evenings from 4:45 p.m. – 6.p.m. beginning on October 23rd, with Tena Roher as our head coach. Over the years, Bible Quiz has shown again and again why it’s been such a great program for our youth. It’s a fun, competitive, and in-depth way to get students to study and memorize Scripture. Many of our high school students consider their participation in Bible Quiz to be one of their most spiritually formative experiences. We hope that all of our 7thand 8 th grade students will consider giving it a try. If you have questions, contact Tena Roher or Jason Porterfield.
PLEASE JOIN US NEXT SUNDAY, October 2nd as we commemorate Bobby Kirkpatrick’s 10 years of service as part of the pastoral staff of Friendswood Friends Church. We will be dedicating one of the trees on our front lawn and placing a plaque in Bobby’s honor as we celebrate this milestone. This will be done in a brief ceremony between 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. services. We hope that you will participate in helping to recognize Bobby for his years of faithful ministry among us.
SAVE THE DATE for our all-church Fall Retreat! Everyone is invited to join us from 7 p.m. on November 11th through noon of the 13th at Forest Glen Camp (just outside of Huntsville). We’ll be staying in air conditioned/heated cabins, so no need to bring tents or camping gear. The cost of $125 for adults or $80 for kids 3 – 18 yrs. (children under 3 are free) includes 2 nights lodging, 4 meals, and lots of optional activities such as canoeing, hikes, campfires, sports & games, crafts, etc. The program will be loosely structured so that you will have the freedom to spend time alone relaxing and enjoying nature, or to engage in groups and activities as much as you like. Space is limited so pick up a registration form from the kiosk or download a copy from the church website at friendswoodfriends.org. Your full payment and completed registration will reserve a spot. If you have questions, contact John Dawson, Bobby Kirkpatrick or Janet Black at 281-482-7821.
THE DAY CENTER FOR FAMILY PROMISE is in the process of being restored and renovated for use. Our church is supporting the project by helping set up the kitchen area. We are asking for the following donations: blinds, shelf liner, coffee maker, microwavable containers or tupperware, dishes, silverware, dish towels, dishwasher. Cash donations are also welcome. The deadline to donate items is September 30th. Please email Molly Black for more information.
FAMILY PROMISE OF CLEAR CREEK will be holding a fundraiser gala on October 22nd from 6 – 10 p.m. at the S.E. Church of Christ (2400 Bay Area Blvd). HOST A HALLOWEEN BLOCK PARTY (October 29th, 30th, or 31st) and apply for a $100 grant to make it happen. Invite your neighbors and open the invitation to Friendswood Friends. Here is a chance to get to know and hang out with your neighbors and church friends. We are willing to loan our games (first come first serve). We are encouraging this “get to know people” Block Party in place of our Fall Festival which is usually held in the gym. Deadline for grant applications is October 11th; find applications on the church website. For more information, contact Janet Black.
SAVE THE DATE: On Sunday, November 6th, we will host a BBQ lunch and Silent Auction after church. All proceeds will benefit Missions.
OUR SILENT AUCTION at the November 6th BBQ will raise funds to help support our local and world missions. Do you have something that you would be willing to donate to the auction? Here are some ideas to get you started: Handcrafted items, event tickets, gift certificates, paintings or prints, themed gift baskets, antiques, jewelry – anything that people might bid on! Maybe you have just one or two small items that we could combine with others to make a basket. Please bring silent auction donation items to the church office.
SAVE THE DATE: FFC Women’s Retreat at T Bar M Resort in New Braunfels, TX – January 27th – 29th 2017
I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let’s go to the Lord’s house!”
2 Now our feet are standing
in your gates, Jerusalem!
3 Jerusalem is built like a city
joined together in unity.
4 That is where the tribes go up—
the Lord’s tribes!
It is the law for Israel
to give thanks there to the Lord’s name,
5 because the thrones of justice are there—
the thrones of the house of David!
6 Pray that Jerusalem has peace:
“Let those who love you have rest.
7 Let there be peace on your walls;
let there be rest on your fortifications.”
8 For the sake of my family and friends,
I say, “Peace be with you, Jerusalem.”
9 For the sake of the Lord our God’s house
I will pray for your good.
