Sermon: David Bridges
THE FLOWERS ON THE ALTAR TODAY are given by Todd & Lesley Bruemmer in loving memory of Todd’s dad Steve and Lesley’s Grandma Ernestine. We are thankful for the influence they had in our lives, which helped us to become the people we are today. Thank you Lord!
THE CHURCH OFFICE will be closed Monday, October 10th in observance of Columbus Day.
OCTOBER IS PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH! The Clerk and Coordinators encourage you to take time to let our pastors know how much their ministry means to you. For the past several years we have had a tradition of “showering” our pastors with gift cards to local businesses. A card or a thoughtful note would also be a great way to express your appreciation. And, don’t forget to lift up our pastors in prayer on a regular basis.
TREE DEDICATION: Please join us this morning as we commemorate Bobby Kirkpatrick’s 10 years of service as part of the pastoral staff of Friendswood Friends Church. We are dedicating one of the trees on our front lawn and placing a plaque in Bobby’s honor in a brief ceremony between 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. services. We hope that you will participate in helping to recognize Bobby for his years of faithful ministry among us.
FAMILY PROMISE OF CLEAR CREEK will be holding a fundraiser gala on October 22nd from 6 – 10 p.m. at the S.E. Church of Christ (2400 Bay Area Blvd). The guest speaker will be Debbie Simmons, CEO of Anchor Point. The cost is $65. If you would like to attend you may email your ticket request to firstname.lastname@example.org. A silent auction will be held during the gala. If you have items that you would like to donate, please contact David Bridges.
TICKETS GO ON SALE NEXT WEEK for the November 6th Barbecue lunch. The cost is $10 per person through Sunday, October 30th. Tickets for children ages 6-10 cost $5. Beginning on Monday, October 31st the price for any remaining adult tickets will go up to $15, so plan to get yours early. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the church during office hours.
HOST A HALLOWEEN BLOCK PARTY (October 29th, 30th, or 31st) and apply for a $100 grant to make it happen. Invite your neighbors and open the invitation to Friendswood Friends. Here is a chance to get to know and hang out with your neighbors and church friends. We are willing to loan our games (first come first serve). We are encouraging this “get to know people” Block Party in place of our Fall Festival which is usually held in the gym. Deadline for grant applications is October 11th; find applications on the church website. For more information, contact Janet Black.
SILENT AUCTION REMINDER – Do you have something that you would be willing to donate to the missions silent auction? Here are some ideas to get you started: Handcrafted items, event tickets, gift certificates, paintings or prints, themed gift baskets, antiques, jewelry – anything that people might bid on! Maybe you have just one or two small items that we could combine with others to make a basket. Please bring silent auction items to the church office by October 21st.
SAVE THE DATE for our all-church Fall Retreat! Everyone is invited to join us from 7 p.m. on November 11th through noon of the 13th at Forest Glen Camp (just outside of Huntsville). (children under 3 are free) includes 2 nights lodging, 4 meals, and lots of optional activities such as canoeing, hikes, campfires, sports & games, crafts, etc. The program will be loosely structured so that you will have the freedom to spend time alone relaxing and enjoying nature, or to engage in groups and activities as much as you like. Psalm 126 (MSG)
1-3 It seemed like a dream, too good to be true,
when God returned Zion’s exiles.
We laughed, we sang,
we couldn’t believe our good fortune.
We were the talk of the nations—
“God was wonderful to them!”
God was wonderful to us;
we are one happy people.
4-6 And now, God, do it again—
bring rains to our drought-stricken lives
So those who planted their crops in despair
will shout hurrahs at the harvest,
So those who went off with heavy hearts
will come home laughing, with armloads of blessing.
