Sermon: David Bridges
“God’s Work, Our Work”
OCTOBER IS PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH! The Clerk and Coordinators encourage you to take time to let our pastors know how much their ministry means to you. For the past several years we have had a tradition of “showering” our pastors with gift cards to local businesses. A card or a thoughtful note would also be a great way to express your appreciation. And, don’t forget to lift up our pastors in prayer on a regular basis.
FAMILY PROMISE OF CLEAR CREEK will be holding a fundraiser gala on October 22nd from 6 – 10 p.m. at the S.E. Church of Christ (2400 Bay Area Blvd). The guest speaker will be Debbie Simmons, CEO of Anchor Point. The cost is $65. If you would like to attend you may email your ticket request to firstname.lastname@example.org. A silent auction will be held during the gala. If you have items that you would like to donate, please contact David Bridges.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR – On Sunday, November 6th we will have one combined worship service at 10:00 a.m. Most Sunday school classes will not meet that day. Following the service, you are invited to stay to enjoy a delicious Barbecue lunch and our annual silent auction. All funds raised from the meal and auction will go to missions.
CAN YOU HELP TO RESTOCK OUR FOOD PANTRY? We are approaching the time of year when we receive the most requests for food assistance. If you could pick up a few extra items to donate to the food pantry while you are doing your own grocery shopping, your help would be a great blessing! Items most needed at this time are peanut butter, jelly, pasta sauce, toothbrushes, deodorant, instant mashed potatoes and dried beans. Items can be placed in the wicker basket marked “Food Pantry” located in the Coffee Café. Another idea: Think about organizing a food drive where you work or in one of the groups that you belong to. As the Thanksgiving season approaches, many people are thinking about ways that they can help to bless others, and the food pantry is a great way to do that.
SILENT AUCTION REMINDER – Do you have something that you would be willing to donate to the missions silent auction? Here are some ideas to get you started: Handcrafted items, event tickets, gift certificates, paintings or prints, themed gift baskets, antiques, jewelry – anything that people might bid on! Maybe you have just one or two small items that we could combine with others to make a basket. Please bring silent auction items to the church office by October 21st.
THE PRIMETIMERS “SLOW BOAT TO CHINA” LUNCHEON takes place Thursday, October 20th at 11:30 a.m. where special surprise guests will give us a grand countryside tour following our feast of Chinese cuisine. Come meet the Reas, our Missionary Family that served in China for many years, as our special guests. This is a perfect opportunity to don your Chinese bamboo hat, your silk kimono, and bring some questions. Our luncheon will be furnished, so just invite a guest, and come to enjoy our time together.

A HUGE THANK YOU for the volunteer efforts on behalf of this weekend’s Women’s Retreat in Galveston! Janis Mcintosh took a lead role in the creation of the silent auction baskets, which looked wonderful! Jane Beck and Janis Macintosh drove to Bayshore Friends Church on a Friday night to help make several of the table favors. Thanks to Michelle Hancock, Gayle Jircik, Eddie Rollins, Cindy Page, and Nannette Samson who brought cookies. Twenty dozen cookies were donated for our retreat attendees. Thank you very much! Blessings, Diane Leaverton

Psalm 127 (MSG)
1-2 If God doesn’t build the house,
the builders only build shacks.
If God doesn’t guard the city,
the night watchman might as well nap.
It’s useless to rise early and go to bed late,
and work your worried fingers to the bone.
Don’t you know he enjoys
giving rest to those he loves?
3-5 Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift?
the fruit of the womb his generous legacy?
Like a warrior’s fistful of arrows
are the children of a vigorous youth.
Oh, how blessed are you parents,
with your quivers full of children!
Your enemies don’t stand a chance against you;
you’ll sweep them right off your doorstep.
