HARVEY UPDATE 4

HARVEY UPDATE 4

Friendswood Friends Church Responds to Tropical Storm Harvey

Date:  Saturday, 2 September 2017

Today, the fourth day of our recovery effort, seventy of our parishioners volunteered to work at ten homes needing assistance.  We had 25 volunteers working at one residence alone due to the extent of the damage there.  By the end of the day, our volunteers had completed demolition work at sixteen homes, which is an amazing feat, but we still have fourteen homes to go.

More than ten volunteers supporting our child care efforts looked after more than 30 children between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm while their parents helped others cope with this disaster.  We will not have child care on Sunday, and will offer child care only between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm on Monday.

We are grateful for our volunteers and those who have donated materials and funds to support the recovery effort.  We continue to receive supplies from Austin and Dallas, Texas, and from people as far away as Ohio and Washington State.  We have also received expressions of support from Friends in California, Idaho, Kansas, Oklahoma, Ohio, Indiana, Louisiana, Colorado, Oregon, and all over Texas. It is reassuring to know that people are responding this way throughout the greater Houston area.  We know we are in good hands in the midst of all of this support.

During this phase of the recovery, we are limiting receipts of supplies to those items that we specifically request.  We ask that anyone interested in donating supplies please call our emergency operations center first and we will gladly discuss our needs.

We are also accepting donations of funds, which will be used completely and exclusively for the benefit of flood victims.  Please go to our website at friendswoodfriends.org to donate to our recovery effort.
