Sermon: David Bridges
“New Start. New Life.”
John 2.23-3.18

THE FLOWERS ON THE ALTAR TODAY are given in thanksgiving and celebration of Carl and Hank Horecky’s 69th wedding anniversary.

HARVEY RELIEF WORK continues to be a critical need in this area, as many families are still displaced and do not have funds to repair their homes. Friends Disaster Service has recently been remobilized under the leadership of Kim Page; the group has been very active over the past several months in helping with repairs for members of our own congregation as well as affected people in nearby communities. There is still a huge amount of work to be done. Please join us today at 3 p.m. in the Coffee Café for an update on the work that has been done as well as information on future plans and how we can be involved. For FDS to function effectively, we need not only volunteers who can help with the physical labor, but people who could provide support in helping with phone calls and communications, meals, transportation, housing for out of town crews, etc. Prayer support is also important.  We hope that you can plan to be present at this meeting to hear more about the ministry of FDS, which will be an important way for us to bless our community in the months ahead.

LADIES, there is still time to register for our 2018 Women’s Retreat – “SERIOUSLY GOD??” Seeking Christ in the midst of every storm, at Camp Tejas in Giddings, TX – February 2nd – 4th. The cost for quadruple occupancy is $260; there are still a limited number of private rooms available. The final day to register is January 29th. Registration forms are available on the kiosk or you can register and pay online at friendswoodfriends.org; click on 2018 Women’s Retreat. For any questions, please contact Beth Stanfield.

OUR NEW CHURCH DIRECTORIES are nearing completion, but we are still missing a few photos. If you have not yet submitted a photo, would you be willing to have your picture taken following the worship service on either Sunday, February 4th or Sunday, February 11th? We will have one or two photographers on hand, and it won’t take much of your time. Or, if you already have a good photo, you can email it to joyce@friendswoodfriends.org.  We hope to finish up work on the directories in the next few weeks so that we can print them and get them to the congregation. Our hope is that this will be a helpful tool for allowing us to get to know one another better and to put names with faces. Thank you for your participation!

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS for 2017 were sent by email or regular mail last week. If you did not receive your statement or if you have questions, please contact Joyce at 281-482-7821 or joyce@friendswoodfriends.org. Thank you for your faithfulness in making contributions to our church! For 2017 we not only ended in the black for cash flow, but exceeded the amount that had been budgeted for contributions. This is a great blessing as we face some significant upcoming expenses in repairs to our facilities.

LADIES’ BIBLE STUDY will be starting again soon! Please mark your calendar for February 7th and plan to join us for a study led by Kody Shepherd (topic TBA). We’ll meet on Wednesday mornings in the Coffee Café, with refreshments and fellowship at 9:15 followed by the study starting at 9:30 a.m. and finishing by 11. Nursery care is available but we need a headcount, so please contact the church office to reserve a place for your children if you plan to bring them to the nursery.  More information regarding the book selection will be available next week.

TRANSPORTATION HELP NEEDED: Ron Worden is home following his recent hip surgery and is doing really well.  He needs a ride from his house to the nursing home (near SE Memorial Hospital) each Wednesday morning to spend the day with his wife Barbara. Can you help?  We hope that several people can rotate on this, and volunteers are needed starting this Wednesday. Call Jon Kerr.

PARENTS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: You are invited to an informational meeting about the spring break trip to Mexico, March 10th-16th– please join us in the high school room on TODAY at 4 p.m. Students are welcome to attend as well. No commitment is necessary – just come to hear about the trip and ask any questions that you might have. Fund-raising ideas will also be discussed. Our groups spend time in Mexico every other year since 1993 with Friends churches in the area around Nueva Rosita and we are excited to go back and serve again! We’ll spend time worshipping together, helping to complete construction projects on churches and assisting with children’s vacation Bible school. For more information, check out www.efcmaym.org/spring-invasion-2018/. Questions? Email Josiah at josiah@friendswoodfriends.org.

MISSIONS COMMITMENT SUNDAY is coming up on February 11th! We will celebrate and learn more about the ministries that our church is involved in around the world. We will ask you to prayerfully consider making a commitment to be a part of these ministries through prayer, giving and/or volunteering. Our goal for 2018 is to raise $51,600 to help support the following ministries:

  • Brian and Kylie C.
  • David and Kathryn L.
  • Jack and Celesta Rea’s work in Hong Kong/China.
  • David Thomas and Brad and Chelsea Carpenter in Discipling for Development in Rwanda, Burundi and beyond.

We are excited to learn what God has in store for us with mission projects in foreign lands. We are praying for His direction about how and where we volunteer and care for our missionaries and mission fields. What a privilege we have to be a part of what God is doing in other communities around the world. Prayer is a crucial part of ANY ministry, but in some ways it can be harder to commit to regular, fervent prayer than to just slip some money into the offering plate. Would you be willing to choose at least one missionary or ministry to pray for regularly in 2018? Thank you to those of you who are already praying faithfully! If you would like to learn more about what we are planning for missions, you are encouraged to pick up an information flyer from the kiosk.

SAVE THE DATE: Congregational business meeting after the service on February 25th.
