QUESTIONS FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH: For the next few weeks we will be featuring a different selection each week from the list of questions that our church elders wrote to help guide us as individuals and a congregation during 2018. If you would like to have a complete copy of the Questions for Spiritual Growth or the Hopes and Commitments Statement, you can pick one up from the kiosk, or find them on the church website. This week’s question: “How might God want to prune our church in the year ahead so that we might bear more fruit?”

A FLU SHOT CLINIC will take place on Sunday, October 21st from 9:30-11:30 a.m. No appointment is necessary, just stop by the Coffee Café to get your shot. The high dose shots for senior citizens will also be available. Bring your insurance card with you as many plans cover the cost of flu shots.

THE PRIMETIMERS will be holding a Halloween Grilled Hotdog Party luncheon on October 18th at 11:30 a.m. in the Coffee Café. We will be entertained by Marian Gordners’ Fun Time Recorder and Ukulele Band from the Senior Center. Everyone over 50 is invite to come, bring a dessert to share and  enjoy the spooky music, fellowship and FUN!

MEALS ON WHEELS is in need of volunteers both for permanent routes as well as substitutes. The next week of our responsibility is October 29th – November 2nd. One day during that week you will meet at the church at 11:30 and drive or ride with a driver on one of the two routes. It takes about 1 1/2 hours. Call Darleen Latimer if you would like to volunteer. Thanks for your willingness to help with this crucial ministry.

YOU ARE WARMLY INVITED to a wedding shower for Maggie Roher and Luke Thomas on Sunday, October 28th from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in the Coffee Café. This is a come-and-go event, and spouses and families are encouraged to attend! Maggie and Luke are registered at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Amazon, and Pottery Barn. See you there!

WHAT NIGHT OF THE YEAR do your neighbors come knocking at your door? Yes, Halloween! Coming up on October 31st you have a great opportunity to show your hospitality and welcome people from your community! We are so excited for you to get to know your neighbors better that we are offering $100 scholarships to people from our church who are willing to host a Halloween event at their home, and who will allow us to share the information in the bulletin. Use the money to buy food, rent a moonwalk or anything else you need to welcome neighbors and friends! For more information or to apply for one of the scholarships, contact Janet Black at the church office. The deadline to apply is Monday, October 22nd.

FALL BEACH RETREAT: Sign up now for our all-church fall retreat November 9th -11th!  The cost is $100 for adults and $75 for 3 years through high school there is no charge for children under 3. Reserve your spot by filling out one of the registration forms on the kiosk and turning it in with your payment. The deadline to register is approaching! If you have questions, contact Bobby, Janet or Josiah at the church office.

KIDS’ HOPE is in need of a few more men to volunteer as mentors this year! Our Kids Hope program partners adults in our congregation with students from Westwood and Bales schools. The participants are students who teachers or administrators believe could benefit significantly from the kind of one-on-one mentoring relationships provided by Kids’ Hope. Mentors meet with students for one hour each week during normal school hours to serve as a positive role model and friend for their student. For more information if you are interested in volunteering, please contact Beth Stanfield or Bobby Kirkpatrick.

CAN YOU HELP RESTOCK OUR FOOD PANTRY? We are approaching the time of year when we receive the most requests for food assistance. If you could pick up a few extra items to donate to the food pantry while you are doing your own grocery shopping, your help would be a great blessing! Items most needed at this time are (unopened and still in date) peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables, pasta sauce, rice and dried beans. Items can be placed in the wicker basket marked “Food Pantry” located in the Coffee Café. Another idea: Think about organizing a food drive where you work or in one of the groups that you belong to. A complete food pantry donation list is available on the kiosk.

TICKETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE for the BBQ lunch which will be served following the worship service on TODAY! All proceeds will benefit our missions fund, so you have a chance to enjoy some of Travis Mantell’s amazing BBQ while also helping to support the work of our missionaries around the world. The prices at the door are $10 for kids and $15 for adults. If you have offered to make a dessert, please bring it to the gym kitchen before the service. While you are at the BBQ, take a moment to look at the beautiful quilted bags from China that Celesta Rea has available for sale. Proceeds help to support the “Hands of Hope” ministry to disabled Chinese women. Celesta has been involved in this ministry for the past 18 years by assisting with designing and marketing the products. By purchasing one of these bags for yourself or as a gift, you are helping these ladies who are in a very challenging situation to make a living.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR ONE OR TWO VOLUNTEERS to help run the slides for the music and sermons during Sunday morning worship. You would serve about one Sunday each month, and the dates can be flexible if you have a conflict. Training is provided; if you have used a computer it is very easy to learn. To volunteer or for more information, please contact the church office at 281-482-7821 or shannon@friendswoodfriends.org. This is a ministry that involves serving the church in a very important way but with a very minimal time commitment! Please pray about whether you might be able to help.
