BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR AUGUST 25, 2019

Message: Jason Porterfield
“Woe, Woe, Woe, Woe, Woe, Woe, Woe!”
Matthew 23:13-32

OUR SENIOR PASTOR, David Bridges, is on Sabbatical this summer and will return to our worship on September 15th. Please feel free to reach out to our associate pastor, Bobby Kirkpatrick, while David is away. We invite you to pray for David to be refreshed and renewed through his Sabbatical experience.

ATTENTION those in your 20s and 30s! We have started a new Sunday School class, led by Michelle and Joe Hancock, upstairs in room 327 of the Friends Center (gym building). Anyone in their 20s and 30s is welcome! Class meets from 9-9:45 a.m. before heading over to 10 a.m. worship. Come join us!

THE FRIENDS CHORALE is beginning a new season and welcomes new members, teens to adults! Our first rehearsal is this evening at 5 p.m, in the Worship Center. We will be working on general, Advent and Christmas anthems, with accompaniment from bells, percussion, flute, harp, and other added instruments. Please join us for an enjoyable evening of singing and fellowship!

LADIES’ FALL BIBLE STUDY will begin on Wednesday, September 11th at 9:30 a.m. This will be a 6-week long study focused on Psalm 23. Nursery care is available. All ladies are welcome – come and bring a friend!

THE KOINONIA SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS is delaying their fall start date to Sunday, September 8th due to the travel schedules of leaders and class members. All adults are welcome to visit the class to give it a try. They meet on the first floor of Friends Center in Room 303.

COME MEET Robyn Schell’s fiancé, David Boren, at a couples’ bridal shower. This event will take place in the Coffee Cafe on Saturday, September 14th from 1-3 p.m. Robyn is requesting that guests bring a favorite recipe to the shower to help stock her recipe card holder. Come hungry, as there will be a light luncheon served. The couple is registered at Amazon, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn and Target. We hope to see you there!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE during the process of our construction work in Friends Center. For the past several weeks we have been working on remodeling the entry and bathrooms. This phase of the project should be winding down soon. Although it has involved some mess and some disruption to our activities, we are looking forward to having more attractive and functional facilities to use for ministry.

THERE WILL BE a continent-wide gathering of Hispanic Friends in October at the Bayshore Friends Church (near Kemah) and our church may be able to help with housing, meals, transportation and/or other needs. If you would like to get involved or want more information, you can fill out the volunteer form on the website www.CHMonline.org or contact David Byrne at 713-922-3113 or by email at David@InstitutoALMA.org.

DINNER FOR EIGHT Are you tired of the Church ignoring tough topics?  Are you looking for a safe place to dialogue on issues such as immigration, white privilege, and bias (conscious and unconscious)? Whatever your political views, you are invited to dinner and conversation on the evening of September 22nd from 5-7 pm. Several friends from our church will host a “Dinner for Eight”in their homes, where there’ll be good food and conversation around a specific current issue. Childcare will be available at church from 4:30 – 7:30 pm, and there is no cost to attend. However, spots are limited, so sign up early.  Today through September 8, Kelly Browning and Laura Porterfield will be in the Coffee Café after the service to answer questions and assist with sign-up.

KIDS’ HOPE needs new volunteers to work as either mentors, prayer partners, or substitute mentors this year! Our Kids Hope program partners adults in our congregation with students from Westwood and Bales schools. The participants are students whom teachers or administrators believe could benefit significantly from the kind of one-on-one mentoring relationships provided by Kids’ Hope. Mentors meet with students for one hour each week during normal school hours to serve as a positive role model and friend for their student. Prayer partners are assigned to pray for the mentors and students, and substitutes are placed on a call sheet to help sub for mentors who might have a conflict with their assigned meeting times. For more information if you are interested in serving in one of these positions (we need people in all 3!), please contact Beth Stanfield beth@stanfieldproperties.com or Bobby Kirkpatrick at bobby@friendswoodfriends.org.

KIDS CAN DO CLUB AND CHILDREN’S CHOIR will resume for the fall on Wednesday, September 11th! Children’s Choir will meet in Friends Center at 5 p.m. under the direction of Karen Jantz to work on preparations for a Christmas program. Children from 5 years old through 5th grade are invited to participate.  Kids Can Do Club is for children from 3 years old through 5th grade. They meet at 5:45 p.m. for a kid-friendly meal, and then from 6 to 7 p.m. they focus on projects to serve others.  Some of their past activities have included making gifts to deliver to senior citizens who receive Meals on Wheels, preparing “blessing bags” to distribute to the homeless, packing shoeboxes with Christmas gifts for Operation Christmas Child, baking dog biscuits for the local animal shelter, and taking a field trip to a local nursing home to sing songs and deliver Valentine gifts.  The kids have a great time while also learning the joys of serving others. Please note the earlier start time this year for both children’s choir and KCD; we hope that this will be helpful for families getting children to bed on time on school nights.
