July 20th update from Bobby Kirkpatrick

Good morning, Friends!

On Sunday, Josiah preached to us about putting on new “clothes”—changing our thinking, our identity, and then our character to align with Jesus.  This is a great reminder for us to always embrace disciplines of self-reflection. As we continue our journey with Christ, a big part of our growth in that journey is taking the time and space to reflect on where we’ve been, where we are now, and what needs to change so that we live more in the way of Jesus.

Specifically, Josiah mentioned the Sermon on the Mount as a good place to begin reading scripture this week. The very last words of Jesus in this section of scripture—the gospel of Matthew, chapters 5-7—read like this:

“Everybody who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise builder who built a house on bedrock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It didn’t fall because it was firmly set on bedrock. But everybody who hears these words of mine and doesn’t put them into practice will be like a fool who built a house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It fell and was completely destroyed.”

Jesus directly compared “hearing” the words he was saying and putting them into practice to building on a strong foundation. Hearing and NOT putting them into practice would be like building on an unstable foundation.

So let’s do two things this week:

  1. Remind ourselves of what we’ve already heard: let’s read the words of Jesus, like Josiah challenged us to do. Maybe not ALL of the words of Jesus at once, but let’s read some of them at least!
  • Let’s take the next step and intentionally put His words into practice. In so doing, we will be training ourselves to live in the way that Jesus wants us to live and we will be building our houses on the good foundation—the one that lasts!

Let’s build on the good foundation of Jesus this week, and may He give us the strength to stand up to the storms of life.

  • Congratulations to Will and Katelyn Hancock, who were married this past Sunday afternoon, July 18th, 2021! Will grew up in our church, and is the son of Joe and Michelle Hancock, with sisters Emmi and Abby (and her husband, Matt) and brothers Matt and Habtamu.  Make sure to congratulate them when you can!
  • Sunday School classes will resume on August 15th, at 9 am.  Please watch for more specific information in the coming weeks as we get closer to restarting!

May God’s grace and peace go with you as you continue your journey in following Christ this week.
