May 11th update from David Bridges

Greetings in Christ’s name! My family and I were introduced to the Friends Church in the summer between my 3rd and 4th grade years when we moved to Haviland, Kansas.  What was most new to us in worship among Friends was the tradition of “open” or “unprogrammed”  worship.  At Haviland Friends Church, it was common for several people to speak during open worship, offering words of encouragement or issuing a challenging message or simply voicing a prayer for our congregation…

VBS Volunteer Sign Up

Our 2021 Vacation Bible School takes place from June 21-25, and we will need LOTS of adult and student volunteers. This year we will be having two separate VBS sessions to allow for more distancing. The morning session will take place from 9 am -noon and the afternoon session from 1-4 pm. Lunch will be provided for volunteers in between the 2 sessions. All workers will also receive a free T-shirt. Students finishing grades 6 and up are eligible to…

VBS 2021

Our 2021 Vacation Bible School will take place from June 21-25. If you registered for VBS in 2020 and opted to save your child’s place rather than requesting a refund, you should have already received an email from Janet Black with information about this year’s program. If you did not receive the email, the same information is copied below. We are keeping our numbers smaller than usual to help provide a safer environment for the children and our volunteers, so…

April 20th update from David Bridges

The first chapter of Acts tells us that after he was raised from the dead, Jesus appeared to the apostles over a period of 40 days, speaking to them about God’s kingdom (verse 3).  In one of those appearances, recorded in Matthew 28, Jesus told his disciples to, “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you.…

April 6th update from David Bridges

Greetings in the name of the risen Christ!  We are so familiar with the Easter story that we hardly notice the lack of celebration and triumph in the gospel stories themselves.  I’ve been preaching from Luke this spring, and on Easter Sunday we read Luke’s text about that first resurrection morning.  Luke does not say that when the women found the empty tomb they were overjoyed.  Instead, they seemed to be at a loss of how to explain what had…

March 23rd update from David Bridges

Greetings in Christ’s name!  In my message on Sunday I briefly noted that in Luke 19 Jesus told Zacchaeus that salvation had come to Zacchaeus’s household.  That is, he indicated that salvation was for the people in Zacchaeus’s home, not just Zacchaeus himself.  We often miss little nuances like that which seem to signal that salvation can be a corporate reality, not just an individual one.  Our Western minds are not used to this kind of language about salvation, but…

March 2nd update from David Bridges

I’m always impressed with the people in this community when a storm hits us and a lot of people need help.  Both times that my home has flooded I have been astounded by the way people have shown up to help.  This past week several of you have once again answered the call when people were in immediate need.  Janet Black gathered a crew of folks to work in a few places, doing demolition work and moving lots of furniture…
