June 28th update from Bobby Kirkpatrick

Dear Friends,

It’s Vacation Bible School week at the church, and we are reminded every year of Jesus’ words to children as recorded in Matthew 19:

“Some people brought children to Jesus so that he would place his hands on them and pray. But the disciples scolded them.‘Allow the children to come to me,’ Jesus said. ‘Don’t forbid them, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to people like these children.’ Then he blessed the children and went away from there.”

Every year during VBS our church campus enjoys the presence of close to 300 kids. Janet and her team of volunteers do an amazing job organizing—and often herding—the children through activities, lessons, games, crafts, and other activities. Because of the way our church is set up, this means that our offices are along the main thoroughfare as they go from activity to activity. Throughout the morning we can hear them laughing, yelling, knocking on our doors, jiggling doorknobs, singing, and making a LOT of noise.

It’s good to remind myself this week that Jesus wants us to “allow the children to come to (Jesus).” I think that’s one of the things that we’ve been able to consistently celebrate as a church: that our children and student ministry programs do a great job of ushering students into the presence of Jesus.  We’ve been a big part of the surrounding communities in the past as we’ve helped to point children to Jesus; that’s one thing we can celebrate and continually work to do in the future, as well.

The kingdom of heaven belongs to people like these children. Thank you for all you do to direct children to Jesus! Let’s continue to serve our children and students well as a church!

  • We will celebrate Janet Black’s 20th year with us on VBS Sunday, July 3rd.  If you would like to make a donation toward a gift to Janet to celebrate her 20 years among us, please mark your gift “Janet Black 20.”  You can give online by clicking here.
  • This Sunday, we will have our VBS program followed by a luncheon in the Friends Center. I hope as many of you as possible will plan to come! We will have a lot of guests from the community, and it’s a great time to welcome them to worship with us and share a meal together afterward. We will also be celebrating Janet Black’s 20th year with us (see above). Please join us on Sunday!

I love you all and am grateful for you!

 In Christ,

Bobby Kirkpatrick
