September 27th update from Friendswood Friends Church

Let me tell you about our Shower Ministry.  A couple of our friends, Chad Harris and Joel Mueller, have helped the homeless in Houston for many years. As they visited with the homeless, they learned that one of their greatest needs is a way to get clean. Soon, they bought a shower trailer which has three stalls with a toilet, shower and a sink in each stall.  Next, Joel and Chad began parking the shower trailer next to Lord of the…

September 20th update from David Bridges

Greetings in Christ’s name! I was so grateful for everyone who donated blood in Fleta Hill’s honor last Sunday.  Giving blood is a very tangible way to care for others.  Indeed, when you give blood, you literally give of yourself for the sake of someone else, which sounds like a very Christian thing to do.  Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Don’t do anything for selfish purposes, but with humility think of others as better than yourselves. Instead of each person watching out for…

September 13th update from David Bridges

I mentioned on Sunday morning that David Kellum, who with his wife Mae, served among Friends in Africa for more than 30 years, had died last week.  David lived a life that is worth remembering and celebrating (that will happen in Chandler, OK the last weekend of this month).  David was not a pastor, but a mechanic, engineer, builder and fixer of all things.  He established a technical school in Burundi that is now named in his honor.  He started…

September 6 update from David Bridges

Whatever the origins of Labor Day, most of us celebrate it now as a national holiday that gives us a day of rest from work.  I recently heard the former Houston Astro (and San Francisco Giant), Hunter Pence, say that resting and sleeping were the most important thing he’d learned from the fitness staff during his baseball career.  Some of us rest well at night and others of us need naps during the day to keep us going.  From time…

August 30th update from Janet Black

From our director of children’s ministries, Janet Black Hi Friends, Sabbatical: a period of leave or rest from work, according to Webster. The concept of a Sabbatical is based on the Biblical practice of Shmita. In Leviticus 25 God told Moses to plant, prune and harvest the land for six years and during the seventh year to give the land a rest. I am very thankful that you have blessed me with my first sabbatical rest. My grandmother taught us…

August 23rd update from Janet Black

Hi Friends, As the new school year begins from preschool through college, changes come. One change is that today’s Tuesday update comes from your Children’s Pastor. These changes remind me of the “first day back” for me in my childhood, my children’s and now my grandchildren’s. We have all changed but that “first day back” in the fall never seems to change, every year it happens again. We have some changes here at Friends. In the children’s department we started…
