The narrative lectionary is leading us through the gospel of Mark. This gospel jumps right into the life of Jesus and his ministry. Mark 1:21-45 gives us a picture of how Jesus spent his days. We see him pray, preach and teach, and heal. Many encountered Jesus and received the gifts of Jesus, but were still out of tune with what Jesus was doing. God’s kingdom requires the right tone and sensitivity of the heart. To be in tune, we must listen. Early in the morning, well before sunrise, Jesus rose and went to a deserted place where he could be alone in prayer. Simon and those with him tracked him down. When they found him, they told him, “Everyone’s looking for you!” He replied, “Let’s head in the other direction, to the nearby villages, so that I can preach there too. That’s why I’ve come.” Mark 1:35-38
