Good morning, Friendswood Friends family,
I hope everyone is having a good week. I’ve been a little surprised as to how the cooler weather just seems to bring a welcome sigh of relief across all areas of life around here. Needless to say, I’m sure we’re all thankful for it.
When my family had discerned that we would move to Friendswood and join your family, I remember being asked on several occasions about what I was excited about in the new place and in the new role. Almost always, without fail, one of the first things that came to my mind was the opportunity to join and be a part of the staff here. I did not know any of them well but had heard so many positive things and I was drawn to being a part of a team that is intentional in growing and visioning together. I’m only about 3 months in now and there are lots of challenges we face as a staff as you would expect. For the most part, other than Bobby and Joyce, we are all new coming from various contexts. We are still learning the place, even though the others were already a part of this faith family, learning the role, and learning each other. Learning these things well is foundational and vital if we are to move forward in a healthy way.
The good news is we are taking and making strides in this learning. We’ve built in time that allows us to journey together as an extended family. We share, eat, pray, and dream with each other in a way that expresses clearly how each of us sees our role and commitment to Friendswood Friends, and each other, as so much more than a job, but as part of a calling. Each of us is here because we believe God wants us here and that commitment builds trust and vulnerability.
Let me wrap up by saying these two things to the larger church body,
As a staff:
- We are still very much learning, but there’s significant reason to be excited about where we are and where we are headed.
- We are so thankful to you for releasing us in our various roles so we can serve in the ways we do.
Much love and I hope you’re having a wonderful week,
No Tweens and Gym Kids This Week
There will be no Tweens this Thursday, October 12, and no Gym Kids this Friday, October 13 due to the Fall Break. We look forward to seeing everyone again next week on normal days and times.
Missions Spaghetti Lunch
Missions Spaghetti Lunch is just a few weeks away on Sunday, October 22 immediately following the service. Tickets for a plate are $15 and are on sale now. Buy tickets here or after the Sunday Services in the Coffee Cafe. Tickets will also be available at the door. A beautiful quilt made with love by the quilters who meet regularly at the church has been donated to be auctioned off at the spaghetti lunch. All proceeds will be used to provide support for our missionary families. Contact Grace Kirkpatrick or the church office for more details.
Fall Festival is back! Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 29 from 5-7 PM as we host a fun evening of old-school Friends Fall Festival activities, snow cones, hot dogs, trunk-or-treating, and so much more! Be looking for some extra special artwork created for the Fall Festival Art Auction by the kids in Kidzone. There is no cost to attend the festival, but donations to the Shower Ministry are welcome at the door. Feel encouraged to invite your friends and neighbors. If you know you would like to host a trunk for the “trunk or treat” or serve at the festival, contact Tena Roher. Be praying for the ways this event may be a blessing.
Shower Ministry Donations
Experiencing homelessness is difficult and feels hopeless. We appreciate your continued support of the Shower Ministry for the Homeless. One of our number one needs is men’s pants and shorts. Other items that are in high demand are men’s belts, hats, shoes, men’s shirts, and personal-sized toiletries. As we move into cooler months hoodies, coats, sleeping bags, blankets, gloves, etc. are especially appreciated. If you have new or used items to donate, please drop them off at the breezeway outside the Education Building. Contact the church office with questions or if you need assistance in making a donation.
We are so thankful for Jason Porterfield and his work on our church website. He did an amazing job creating new layouts and menu options. We hope that this new design will make communicating about what is happening in our ministries easier to navigate and provide information on ways that you can get involved in and around the church. To view the site, use the same URL as before, follow the link, or type www.friendswoodfriends.org into your browser. Be sure to thank Jason for his time on this project.
Annual Thanksgiving Meal
The church will be hosting its annual Thanksgiving Meal on Sunday, November 19th at 5:00 PM. More details coming soon.
Church Office Closed on October 16
For your planning purposes, the Church Office will be closed on Monday, October 16th for staff planning. Regular office hours will resume on the following Tuesday, October 17th at normal times.
And serve each other according to the gift each person has received, as good managers of God’s diverse gifts. Whoever speaks should do so as those who speak God’s word. Whoever serves should do so from the strength that God furnishes. Do this so that in everything God may be honored through Jesus Christ. To him be honor and power forever and always. Amen. 1 Peter 4:10-11
