Christ didn’t send me to baptize but to preach the good news. And Christ didn’t send me to preach the good news with clever words so that Christ’s cross won’t be emptied of its meaning. The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are being destroyed. But it is the power of God for those of us who are being saved. 1 Corinthians 1:17-18
Paul’s letter to the Corinthians is written to a specific group of people in a specific place and time. The problems they faced included factions and division inside the church, member disagreements, and cultural immorality pressing in on church ethics, so while it was written for a specific context, this letter still has application for us today. The theological truth that Paul offers in this letter can show us how to embrace unity inside the church so that the world would know how to love better. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:22-23
